Afghan literacy rate at that time was a mere 12%. Soviets were behind revolutionizing the country. Literacy in the Soviet Union was 99%, an education system better than the one they have here today.

You ask Americans how can they justify their govt arming and training Mujahideen in the 80's who later became "terrorists" against America in the 90's and 9/11.
They will answer, "US was helping the Afghans fight off the USSR invaders"
But if you watch this CNN docu, the CIA started supplying arms and training to the Jihadists/Mujahideen in July 1979. The USSR invaded Dec 1979.
This means that Soviets invaded cuz US was going to overthrow the Afghan govt by arming the rebels!

@AccordGTR The US began arming them in 1980. It began indirectly financing them and distributing anti-Communist propaganda on their behalf in 1979, IN RESPONSE TO THE RUSSIAN DEPLOYMENT OF FORCES AND COVERT ACTIVITY THERE.

@EkajTheSwordsman There was nothing covert about Russians there...President Amin's govt was socialist and had diplomatic ties with Moscow stretching as far back as 1919 when the Bolsheviks signed a Treaty Of Friendship with King Amanollah.
It was the US that was being covert. US was supporting the military dictator Gen. Zia. who was supporting anti-Afghan rebels with bases inside Pakistan guarded by the Pakistani Army. - Washington Post 2 Feb 1979 Peter Niesewand.

@AccordGTR The Russians were indeed covertly engaged; the KGB knew about the 1978 coup in advance and may have materially assisted it. My point was that there were already thousands of "advisors" deployed to Afghanistan before the American financial aid arrived, and that the aid itself was a response to this deployment. As far as your belief that the Russians had no choice but to kill millions of people given the threat to their national interest; you're entitled to it.

@EkajTheSwordsman I haven't stated my opinion or beliefs yet. You make it seem like the US arrived late in the scene as a "freedom fighter". Obviously you left out some important history...
US was supporting the brutal dictatorship of the Shah of Iran in the 70's.

@AccordGTR The Shah of Iran killed only 1,000 people from 1941-78, and 3,000 during the turmoil of the Revolution, which is surely hugely disproportionate to the hundreds of thousands killed by the Islamic regime. As far as the alleged coup attempt in 1974; there is no evidence whatever to support it, and there are no CIA records to confirm it. Nonetheless, even those who espouse belief in it agree that the CIA aid did not resume again until the Soviet deployment years later.

The Soviet Union was the bloodiest butcher and worst aggressor in history, having killed 62 million of its own people and having fought alongside Hitler before gobbling up Eastern Germany and half of Europe, and attempting to conquer the European and Asian continents. There is no sense in pretending that America is as bad as that.

@EkajTheSwordsman Sure but it doesnt take away the fact that the USA is and has been for a long time a major terrorist state. It has supported, encouraged and financed mass murdering dictators, overthrown democratically elected regimes regularly and kept rich elites or military people in power. To assure further exploitation of those countries and keep its interests intact.
Every time I talk about US crimes they bring out the whole 'the Soviets were worse' so its ok, well no its not.

@EkajTheSwordsman The Soviets have been gone foir a while now yet the US continue the same things they said they were doing to 'fight communism', which is a big joke.
It was always exaggerated to be able to subjugate various countries worldwide and prevent them from taking steps for their own people and to develop. Or the unconditional support to the criminal regime of Israel committing crimes against humanity that the US are directly responsible for.

Constant raids, massacre of civilians, indefinite detentions ,etc.. In this area those crimes are incomparably worse than any of the other parties.
